In a world where perfection is demanded of its citizens, one imperfect woman may be the only person who can save humanity.

One thousand years in the future, humans have developed the ability to alter their genes to create a perfect version of themselves, but not all are so fortunate. Cerys Skye is a Wild Type, genetically unaltered and forced to live in the Refuge—a place for Wild Types and the unlucky citizens whose genetic modifications society has deemed as imperfect.

All the fiery tempered young woman knows is how to fight. Using her wits and skills, Cerys must compete in brutal prize fights if she is to bring food to the table for her younger sister. But, she is always aware that the next fight could her last—she must find a way out of this life.

Leaving behind all that she knows, the last place the tempestuous Cerys expects to find herself is joining the United Planet's Space Force Academy, where she battles prejudice and intolerance in a world run by genetically modified humans.

As the new recruit discovers, not all is as it seems at the Academy with a shadowy cyber-evil seeking to threaten humanity. But, when loyalties are tested and the stakes are high, can Cerys rely on newfound allies and her unshakeable courage to stop the impending catastrophe?

Contains mature themes.

Cerys shifted her jetpac speed to cruise and the hum of thrusters died away, leaving only whistling wind. Her titanium fight boots, and one hundred meters of searing air hung between her and death.

She floated above the Goliath. Her mouth was as dry as sun-scorched wind. Below, tiny people seethed around the edges of the stadium’s arena like leeches, blood-hungry and thirsting for the show to start. As she drifted lower, the Valkyries, all golden tresses and gleaming breastplates, twirled and swooped, a heavenly distraction. She flicked a salute. Gerry and Hilde swept their swords in flashing arcs. Their jetpacs accelerated beneath the holograms of arched wings as they glided into position.

“On me,” Cerys shouted, hitting the drop signal. She dived for the arena. Wind ripped past her, and adrenaline surged in her blood. She shot through images of exploding stars and the crowd turned to the sky like a bristling savage beast. Its roar pounded her like a fist.

Valkyrie. Valkyrie. Valkyrie.

The door to the New York fashion world shut firmly in her face, Moriah Stanhope’s only option seems to be to return to her small-town home as a failure. At least, she would go home in disgrace, but her car was just repossessed. In front of the hottest guy she’s ever seen.

Travis Madera is supposed to hire an assistant. One with qualifications and experience. Someone who won’t be starstruck by the fact he’s a professional football player. But he never could resist a damsel in distress, especially one with all those curves.

Moriah’s been humiliated in front of guys like Travis before. But as his assistant, she has access to every moment of his day-to-day life, so surely she can stay ahead of any potential problems.

Until the past comes rushing into the present.

“Travis…” I whispered, half questioning-half pleading.

He jerked his hand away and sat up straight on the couch. “I’m sorry, Moriah. I didn’t even realize—”

I placed my fingers against his mouth, the heat of his breath rushing across the digits. My touch was so sudden, it surprised even me. His lips were warm and oh so kissable. My pulse hammered away against my ribs, desire blazing through me. I would have kissed him, but Travis was completely still, his face an unreadable mask.

When he didn’t react, I pulled away. I’d made a mistake, misread his touch, something. Panic turned to sheer horror. “Oh my God, I’m sorry.”

His hard exterior softened and he grabbed my hand. He sighed a bit, half-closed his eyes, then brushed his lips across the tips of my fingers in the softest kiss.

I relaxed a little.

“When you touch me, it makes me want things I can’t afford.” I offered weakly, not trusting myself to say much more.

From behind thick lashes, his eyes darkened; an intimate change of his features that spoke to me in a truly primal way. He kissed my fingertips, stroked his hand down my wrist and back up before rubbing small circles against the beat of my pulse.

Emissary by E.B. Brooks

Emissary

by E.B. Brooks

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Science FIction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Two Worlds. One Future.

Ewan O’Meara is no stranger to death: in recent months, he’s found his way to limbo at least once per week, much to his parents’ concern. It’s a necessary price for getting experience to become the greatest adventurer his homeland of Veridor has ever known, but the overbearing Veridian Church has him pinned down, soaking him for the penance gold to unlock his stats each time he respawns. And because the Church’s ancient war put an end to both the godlike Gems and the epic quests they once bestowed, Ewan has no better alternative.

That is, until he encounters a young woman fleeing arrest from the Church’s soldiers. At first glance, Treanna Rothchild needs it: she’s clueless about Veridian life. But she has other skills that defy Ewan’s understanding, and she knows things. Unsettling, seditious things the Church wants kept secret at any cost.

And she’s in Veridor to raise an army, to fight an enemy only she can see.

Risking both life and soul, Ewan follows Treanna where no Veridian has ever been and there is no respawning. But for him to have a chance at making a real difference in the strange, harsh world she reveals to him, he must first come to terms with it. Especially as he and Treanna discover how much it has in common with Veridor—and how much they depend on each other to survive.

New-adult science fiction, wrapped in gaming and fantasy around a hopepunk core, Emissary is an immersive, thought-provoking adventure with a little teen romance and a lot of heart.

Excerpt:

Tree broke contact, then looked at the others. “I’m taking command. Samuel, move Nathan to cover by the lift. Put his feet up, and keep pressure on that wound. We’ll throw down a kit once we can.”

Sam hesitated but nodded, then knelt to scoop Nathan up.

“Love,” Tree said, locking hard, frightened eyes on Ewan. “You’re with me. Loot the corpses. We’ll disguise ourselves, then retake the camel and retreat.”

“What about Gabe and Vincent?”

“They’ll escape with us, if they’re quick enough.”

Ewan swallowed. “Yes, ma’am.”

She darted off to one of the bodies, and he stepped over to the robed figure he’d impaled, thinking a bloody gash in his outfit might be less of a giveaway than a giant frapping hole. But when he pulled the robes free, he knew with a sickened jolt that blood was the least of the differences in appearance.

The man’s copper-skinned face was scarred all over in what was obviously a deliberate, artistic pattern, as though he’d mistaken a knife for a pen. His nose and ears were pierced through with bits of metal, with hair and beard braided and bound in wire that could have come from the ruin’s walls. His muscles were lean and hard, far better fed than should have been possible for someone from the Wastes. Even in death he had a feral air about him, a lingering lethal intent that had Ewan half expecting him to leap out of the sands again.

His hand still clutched a gun, hardly bigger than a tablet. Ewan reached for it, hesitated, and left it to retrieve his thrown sword.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?
Astral projection is so ridiculously useful, but it’s also foundational for so many other skills. These days, the ability to make a philosopher’s stone would be handy, but I’d probably go with the ability to teleport (or fast travel, in gamer terms). Is that paranormal?
What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?
I’m not sure. I don’t advertise a ton about myself, but I don’t exactly hide it, either. I’m a scientist and a philosopher, a polytheist and a gnostic, a homesteader and a woodsman, a gamer, an animal lover, a husband and a father. I’m sure at least some of those would catch any one person who “knows” me by surprise. Which is funny, because I feel like all of these weave into my books, in one form or another.
When writing descriptions of your hero/ine, what feature do you start with?
I tend to start with mindset, which translates to posture, expression, mood. From there, it’s a matter of the usual physical descriptors: skin tone (I worked hard in the second edition of Emissary to avoid the pitfall of white-as-default), hair color and style, eyes, voice. I remember trying to describe Ewan through his own teen-heroic self-image, which felt funny but did help show off his character.
Are you a plotter or a pantster?
More of a plotter than a pantster, but I do leave room for characters to surprise me. After all, if one person can change the course of history, surely a character can do the same in a story!
Did you learn anything from writing this book? If so, what?
I learned how to write, haha! Seriously, I did. I’d never attempted anything so ambitious on the creative writing front before Emissary, and all my writing before that was in scientific papers and the like. I let myself just go with it and be terrible at first, but I soaked in skills and material. It was funny to go back for revisions and see how the writing improved from part to part.
review of Sam Time by Donna Balon
 Sam Time
by Donna Balon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Historical Fiction, Time Travel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When her fiancé is away on business, lonely Samantha Hunter despairs and absorbs herself in historical research. Her nighttime dreams being so vivid, Samantha believes she’s traveling to a past century. As she navigates the Victorian era rules of dos and even more don’ts, she charms Ulysses S Grant while struggling to maintain her present-day romance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

But this was Samantha’s dream, and she could be bold. She stepped forward until she was several feet from Grant and stopped. “Lieutenant Grant,” she said softly.

He turned around. His light blue eyes were his most striking feature. Chestnut-brown hair, mustache, and beard. Straight nose. Square jaw. Wide-at-the-temples facial bone structure. About five eight in height. Slim beneath the soldier’s coat. This was Ulysses S. Grant. In his early thirties. Good-looking.

He glanced at Samantha and then turned around to tend to his horse.

He’s a married man, and he sees an unknown woman. What are the protocols?

Her dream. Her rules.

Samantha persisted, using what she thought was common phraseology for this era. “Lieutenant Grant, I am Miss Samantha. I hear you are an expert horseman. I would be most pleased in taking lessons under your tutelage.”

His back still facing her, he made no reply.

She thought quickly of a scheme. “My brothers are in town on business. It would be most helpful to our family business, if I could learn how to ride.”

“I am a soldier with duties at the fort.” He speaks.

“I understand, Lieutenant Grant. But surely you have leave.”

While keeping a distance of several feet, she stepped to his side so she could see his profile. “I understand you will not transact with a lady, but I will return with one of my brothers. He will pay you compensation.”

“Others can teach you.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Review:
The characters are interesting, but I might be biased when it comes to Samantha because she and I both have a master’s degree in U.S. history.  However, the beginning of the story is an info dump, and there are little ones after that. There is some telling throughout the story, but suspense keeps things going.
Things move quickly between Samantha and Aaron romantically, and they get engaged. Just then, he’s sent out of state for the better part of a year.
Through the dream state, Samantha travels back in time to 1850s California and meets U.S. Grant, who was then a lieutenant. Using her knowledge of history, she shifts her approach and gets Grant to give her riding lessons. She must be clever.
After a while, is Samantha still dreaming, or is she really traveling back in time? It’s a good thing she knows history because otherwise fitting in would be hard to pull off. She uses skills learned in the past in her present. This novel is filled with great historical details that immerse readers into this era.
She brings skills learned in the past into the present, which suggests she was actually in the past. Unwanted temptations get her to thinking about moral questions.
Sam travels forward in time and finds herself in the midst of the Civil War and then later eras. Some surprising events take place, and some even more surprising consequences.
Readers are treated to interesting tidbits of historical information that really add to the story. This book will inspire one to think about important questions concerning the United States and its history. Along the way, Samantha faces new challenges. Can she get out of such tricky situations? This is an engaging story, especially for those who love history.
