IF THE DUKE DARES by Darcy Burke

 IF THE DUKE DARES

by Darcy Burke

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Regency Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Incorrigible flirt Acton Loxley, Duke of Wellesbourne is in need of a duchess. En route to greet a potential bride, he encounters a most intriguing and captivating widow who completely distracts him from his task. However, she disappears before he can deepen their acquaintance. Acton begrudgingly goes to meet his bride, unaware she and the widow are one and the same.

When Persephone Barclay’s younger sister is compromised, Persephone must wed before the scandal spreads. Her parents scramble to present her to the Duke of Wellesbourne; except he’s precisely the kind of rogue she has now vowed to avoid. Taking flight to avoid a match, Persephone runs straight into her would-be betrothed and pretends to be someone else. But dash it all, the duke proves to be irresistibly charming! If she remains in his company, she’ll end up in the wicked scoundrel’s clutches.

Even worse, her second attempt at escape lands her in increasingly poor circumstances. With nowhere to turn and her safety at risk, she may have to accept help from the one man who threatens her resolve—and her reputation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT
His gaze smoldered. “I confess it is taking all my willpower not to propose that you meet me in your aunt’s garden at, say, eleven this evening.”
Heart pounding, Persephone recognized his flirtation for precisely what it was: a rogue roguing. She should be offended, even if he wasn’t serious. Instead, she was incomparably thrilled by the way he was looking at her, by the singular way the sultry tone of his voice caressed her. Apparently, she could still be wooed, as she had been in her youth. Despite those situations turning out poorly—unsatisfying physical interactions and no interest or hope for a future—here she was again actually pondering meeting a man alone. Not just a man, but a scoundrel with a terrible reputation.
“We shouldn’t,” she whispered unconvincingly, which surely conveyed she was considering it.
“Probably not.” He sighed. “But wouldn’t it be lovely if we did?”
It would be more than lovely. It would be something she chose. Something she wanted. “Will you be there?” she asked, holding her breath.
His eyes lit with surprise. “I will. And I promise we’ll just talk. No kissing. You’ll meet me?”
“I’ll consider it.” Strongly. Indeed, she would probably think of little else. Anticipation vibrated through her. She took her other hand from his arm lest she do something foolish, such as grasp him even tighter as she pressed her side to his. Anything to increase their contact. “But what if I want to kiss you?”
“All I can think about is kissing you again.” He sent her a pained expression. “I do realize that makes me the worst sort of rogue—precisely the man you thought I was.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Introduction

My name is Celisha J. I have been through a lot, learned, and am better because of it. I am a firm believer that every lesson is a blessing. God has saved me so many times. I know he did this because he has something bigger planned for me.

My prayer for this book is that it helps women and children who have gone through the same or similar situations to know that they don’t have to allow the traumas of their past to keep them from being successful. I believe that God has a plan for our life, but we did something to alter that plan along the way. He did not intend for us to struggle or have a hard life. He allows us to choose the path we want to go on. The good thing is he is that he is Always there to pick us up when we fall. We were born for greatness.

Hold yourself accountable for your mistakes and forgive yourself and those who hurt you. Forgiveness is for you. I want people to know you can be the best you that you allow. No one says it will be easy, but the main thing to remember is that you are responsible for you. I believe that the only person you can truly believe in life, who won’t let you down, is God and yourself. In order for you to crawl out of the slump of being abused, hurt, let down, controlled, and battered is, your faith in God and the belief that he has better for you. He does not want us to live in our past. He intended for us to learn from it and allow our past to help other people gain strength, but if we tell our stories and we have not grown from what happened to us, then who can we really help?

I have done some things in my past that I am not proud of, and this book tells you my story and how I remember it. No, it is not everything, but the book will tell you the things that stood out the most to me. I have learned a lot and grown from my mistakes, and I have decided not to allow the embarrassment, pain, and struggles from my past to hold me back, so I am releasing it in this book.

This is my Ugly Truth!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is an idea? It is a specialized thought that generally depicts an action or set of actions. For an idea to originate, you need to have a perspective to dig out or spot something that is present. You could even have an eye for detail in which you can generate ideas. You can get ideas from people, things, or events around you. You could get ideas from your own experiences. For example, my book, “I Survived” originated from an idea of narrating my experiences through the early stages of my life.
Ideas generally tend to nurture or creep into an open mind with a willingness to move forward. Throughout my entire life, I ensured that I moved forward through all situations. There were times when I crawled, I walked, I ran, I rolled, but I moved forward. It was, is and will always be my will to move forward that helps me be alerted to think of new ideas always. My book titled, “I Survived”, is the result of an idea that popped in my head. The idea was to send a message to little girls and meek women that they are not alone. The idea was to give them inspiration and hope that there is someone out there who loves and cares for them when they are down, rejected, dejected, and shunned after being abused.
After working on my idea of “I Survived”, I am now working on some of my other ideas – I am acting in a web series, I am working on yet another idea, which is a sequel to my book. God willing, I will come up with more ideas to progress my life the way I want to in the days to come. Thanks to my ideas, I have learnt fantastic lessons that life has taught me, and I am at a stage where I am steadily putting my ideas to action. To achieve this, I have ensured that I select the right people around me who will nurture and help me grow my ideas.
The Prayer Warrior by Traci Wooden-Carlisle and D. Tina Batten
The Prayer Warrior
by Traci Wooden-Carlisle and D. Tina Batten
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Speculative fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
There is a thin line between the natural and the spiritual realm.
Ms. V., a humble servant of the Lord, has been placed on assignment at Center of Hope Christian Academy.
By day, she serves as a trusted counselor for students, giving them a safe haven to pour out their innermost feelings while providing professional and honest truth wrapped in a firm kindness and love that inevitably draws them closer to Jesus. Not to be outdone, the faculty also bends her ear from time to time.
By night, Ms. V. enters the spiritual realm and takes her place on the battlefield as one of God’s faithful prayer warriors. She wields her whispering sword, slicing through the enemy’s plans to bind the precious hearts under her charge.
Her assignment’s burden on her physical body is taxing, but can she withstand the strain and remain victorious?
Saving souls is her true mission, but at what cost?
Readers are in for a journey of spiritual intrigue and biblical insight as they experience the ramifications of each character’s life-altering decision.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

The mist settling over the earth was about five inches high. It nearly obscured the ground in front of her as far as her eyes could see. She was reminded of mud-covered battlefields with little to shield one from enemy fire.

The clouds hung low, making the whole scene look like something out of an apocalyptic dream. The fallow ground before her was vast. It was a wasteland, offering only the promise that nothing would ever grow there again. The desolation could have gone on forever, except for the demonic presence that lined itself up like a dirty barrier of windows used to dim and conceal what was on the other side.

She felt them, though. She felt each and every one of the children held in bondage on the other side of that transparent demonic force. The thought brought to mind a scripture, and she looked down at the writing on the sword in her hand. She could have spent time thinking about how odd it was that she didn’t remember taking a sword with her, but there were more pressing matters, and she was happy to have the weapon to wield.

She began reading the inscribed scripture out loud, her voice ringing across the barren land slick with mud. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,”

As the words left her lips, they solidified in the atmosphere, charging toward their mark like a spear. They reached the barrier, causing it to shift and ripple but not tear.

Surprising Disclosures about The Prayer Warrior

Traci Wooden Carlisle

When I was a teenager I loved to read a (new at that time) series of books called Choose Your Adventure. You would start the book just like any other but as the story progressed you were given a choice of which way the characters could continue forward in the storyline. You could lead them down different roads or have them interact with different people or obtain certain items you think they may need down the line. You could potentially read 13 stories between two covers depending on your choices. Imagine, one book could take you hours to read and give you several different stories.

It was a desire of mine to one day create a book with several different scenarios that would form with one choice. In The Prayer Warrior, as my co-author and I moved through the story regarding Ms. V. and the challenges she was having, I thought it would be fun to add a second twist to the big one that came at the end of the story. What if we could give the readers a choice about how Ms. V.’s story ended? Whichever way the reader chose first they were more than welcome to go back and choose another path, thus giving them the opportunity to read both endings and decide which one they liked more.

We like to ask our readers from time to time, which ending they like best; the one that takes the more spiritual path or the one that takes the more natural path.

Without any spoilers, I would like to say that Ms. V.’s path was very unique. She felt compelled to use the gift God gave her no matter the cost, even if He didn’t request the price she was willing to pay. Although my co-author, D. Tina Batten and I outlined each of the chapters, we were surprised by the curves the storyline took and the depth of the development of the characters. Here is an example of one such scene.

Myra began talking again, her voice growing louder and louder until there was no room for any other conversation in the lounge.

“You are amazing. Scratch that. You are ridiculous, but your ignorance is amazing.” Myra finished at a near growl. She paced back and forth, obstructing the path to the counter that housed the coffee machine, plasticware and microwave.

Mr. McNeely watched Myra with an intensity that rivaled the concentration she’d seen on children’s faces when playing video games.

He waited until Myra reached one end of the counter, then he hopped up and dashed towards the plasticware to swipe a spoon from the organizer, just narrowly escaping before Myra walked back. It reminded Ms. V. of a game of double Dutch, where a person had to wait for the rope to reach the perfect position before they could jump in. Mr. McNeely was that person.

Ms. V. shook her head at the absurdity of the moment. This woman was holding people hostage with her phone call and selfishness.

Myra stopped mid-stride. She bent over, with one hand on her hip and the other holding the phone in front of her face. She spoke into the phone as if she were staring down at the person on the other end.

“I want you to replace every penny you took from my account by the end of today, or you can take every scrap of clothing and personal item you own out of my apartment.” Her voice deepened to just above a growl. The next words were precisely measured, with an over-pronunciation of vowels and consonants. “Hear what I say. When I get home, your presence or complete absence will be my answer to whether or not I sue your…” Ms. V. closed her ears to the word she heard coming.

The gasps in the room were the only noises anyone had made during Myra’s conversation.

We were also pleasantly surprised by some of the messages God shared with us to share with readers even as they became clear through the dialogue and developing scenes. As a whole, “The Prayer Warrior” was a delightful and thought provoking book to write.

So, if you have read “The Prayer Warrior” or consider reading it, I invite you to let D. Tina Batten and myself know which ending you prefer by emailing us at authortraci@gmail.com.

A suspenseful, uplifting story of second chances, family bonds, and redemption.

Sisters Elinor and Saffron rarely see eye-to-eye, but they agree that an unknown half-brother appearing in their lives can only spell trouble. The Greene sisters want to support their ailing mother, Betsy, as they gather in their cottage in Lerici, Italy. But they don’t want Betsy to keep searching for Baby Boy, the only name they have on faded adoption papers.

While the Greenes debate, Baby Boy finds them. A rough childhood has led Daniel to a life as a thief. When he learns of his connection to the wealthy Greenes, he decides to scam them. He goes to Italy and using a fake identity observes them at close range. Watching these people makes him ache for what he never had—a loving family.

Betsy is touched by the young man’s story and guesses their hidden connection. Discovering his true identity, she asks the family to help him. But Daniel’s shady past is catching up and putting the Greenes at risk. Should they bring their lost lamb into the fold—and can he claim his heritage if it endangers his family?

Read an Excerpt:

Robert sang a few words. “How about this?”

“I don’t know it, but it sounds good.”

“It’s my own. I wrote it.”

He began to strum, accompanying his soft voice, and Betsy had another jolt of recognition. It was the voice. There was so much of a similarity in the timbre that it made her ache. She wondered what Elinor would think if she came in while he was singing and heard Nathan’s singing voice coming out of this young man.

The song soothed her every aching muscle and bone. It did her body good and her nerves too. Like a fond memory, it wrapped her in the sensation that life was good and harmonious, that there was honey in every breeze and heaven just around the corner. He had a gift, this fellow. He definitely had talent. So how had he wound up tinkering with plumbing in Lerici? Maybe her intuition was true, and he had come for them.

Betsy lay back as he sang, her arm across her eyes, and thought of days past when musicians sang just for her, and she went home with one of them. Days long before Nathan and his stuffy circle of academics. The music was pulling her back to a time when she could relax and be herself, and her stuffy daughter didn’t criticize her every impulse and comment. She understood that Elinor felt criticized by her; what Elinor didn’t realize is that she’d adopted Betsy’s habit of sharp comments. And somewhere—God knew where—she’d picked up that skepticism that was going to burn her sweetheart down, if she didn’t marry the wonderful Tonio soon.

Robert strummed a last chord, his voice fading into the silence.

She sat up and looked at him. They stared at each other for a moment.

“You remind me of someone,” she murmured. “My ex-husband, Nathan.”

Why didn’t Robert look surprised?
