Review of The Sea's Edge

The Sea’s Edge

by Garth Pettersen

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In 1030 C.E., Cnute, king of England, Denmark, and Norway, sends Harald, his middle son, to the Kingdom of Dublin to meet with his Norse-Irish allies. Harald’s mission is to coordinate an invasion of the northern Welsh kingdom of Gwynedd, to replace King Rhydderch who is growing too powerful on England’s borders. Harald is reluctant to be involved in affairs of state, but agrees to go, even though his beloved wife, Selia, is unwell. Harald tells Selia he will not have to take part in the fighting.

While she waits for Harald to return, Selia and her friend Gudrun befriend a young and attractive gleeman (poet-minstrel). When the gleeman is accused of a crime, Selia seeks witnesses in his defense.

Harald becomes involved in a conflict with Dublin’s neighbor, and to appease the king of Dublin, he commits to leading their combined forces in the attack on Wales. The plan is to replace King Rhydderch with Iago, the weaker King of Anglesey. The more Harald learns of these monarchs, the more his allegiance leans toward the man he has been sent to kill.

Will Harald unseat a strong and just ruler to carry out his father/king’s commands, or will he tread a more righteous road, which will destroy the life he and Selia have built in England?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
The rain beat upon the thatch of Gwyn and Gudrun’s new hall, running off in rivulets that wet-tapped the ground in a thousand places on each side. The evening fire in the hall’s center warmed the occupants where they sat upon benches finishing the evening meal. The woodsmoke rose just well enough to find the smoke hole in the roof. The tang of the smoke was as natural as to them as the smell of the brook trout caught that day. This night all savoured barley-bread hearthcakes and a hearty pottage to which the fish chunks had been added. With Gudrun, Meleri, Selia, and their guest, three hirelings and their small families shared the meal. Two older children sat with Meleri. The housecarls Gunnar and Geir joined the gathering, while Sture acted as wardmann, watching through a watery curtain that dripped relentlessly from the roof of an out-building.
“Tell me, Trygve,” Selia said, scooping the pottage with her chunk of hearthcake, “why are you known as Trygve det Kostbar, ‘Trygva the Precious’?”
The ale-scop finished drinking from the horn of ale that was going round and passed it to another. “It is not always the best names that attach themselves. Whether it was originally a jest, I know not, but where I grew up in Jórvik, there was more than one Trygve. They say I was an attractive and well-behaved child and folk called me “Precious.”
“Not because of self-love?” Selia shot a knowing glance to Gudrun, who stifled a laugh.
“I...” Trygve began to speak but probably decided against defending himself. “No, I think not.”
“And what were the other Trygves called?” Gudrun asked with a barely hidden smile.
“Trygve Bent Nose,” Selia suggested.
“Trygve Small Balls?” said Gudrun.
“Trygve Cat Whiskers?” Selia added. By now the women laughed with abandon and even the children joined in.
“Trygve Dog Shit?” said the young boy, Cerdic.
To his credit, Trygve the Precious laughed along with everyone.
The jibing continued until everyone’s wits became stale and the names less clever.
“Well, Trygve,” said Gudrun. “It is a wise man who can laugh when the jest targets him,”
“An ale-scop would soon be unwelcome if he took offence at every fire he shared.”
Review:
We dive into the exciting Viking world of 1030. There is a character list and a glossary, as well as a map, to help with understanding. The author does well to put us in the setting, with convincing dialogue and world details.
Selia is a strong and compassionate character, married to King Cnute’s son, who is a good match for her. They have a mission and meet quite the interesting historical characters along the way. These characters are unique with their own quirks. There is some philosophy mixed in too.
This is a Viking tale as good as any others I have read, with a colorful cast of characters that really fill out the setting. It is a well-written tale of old with plenty of details and adventure to keep the pace quick.
Western Justice by Dean L. Hovey
Western Justice
by Dean L. Hovey
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When human remains are found at the Vore Buffalo Jump, the short-staffed local sheriff’s department requests assistance from Park Service Investigators Doug and Jill Fletcher.
ATV tracks lead the investigators to the victim’s boots and a hunting blind constructed on the edge of the Black Hills National Forest. With more questions than answers the Fletchers find themselves pulled into the community dynamics of tiny Aladdin (population 15) where the café and general store are the hub of information for the county.
The surprising identification of the victim only opens more questions about him, and his connection to the location of his murder. When the Fletchers follow up on the few leads provided by John Doe’s identification, they unwittingly open a can of worms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Jill’s voice was soft and even. “Have you noticed anyone sitting in the timber behind the store?”

Tanya opened her mouth, but hesitated. “I don’t often look up the hill. I mean, it’s just trees and stuff. I’m usually focused on doing something for the store when I’m in the back.”

Jill nodded toward Tanya’s pistol. “I used to carry a 9mm when I was younger. I could never handle the recoil of a .45.”

Tanya relaxed a bit. “I’m not concerned about the recoil because I only plan on shooting once. When you shoot something with a .45, it stays shot.”

Randy leaned forward to look at Jill. “Unlike the well driller you shot thirteen times with your 9mm before he stopped running.”

Zane’s eyes went wide, and he turned toward Jill. “That was you in the Hulett shootout?”

I gestured for Randy to zip his lips. He saw Jill look away, then made a circle on the bar top with his beer bottle. “I might’ve spoken out of school. Sorry, Jill.”

Seeing Jill’s remorse, Zane turned toward her. “I’m sorry. I get it. I really do. I take no joy in shooting an animal. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if I shot another person.”

Jill nodded. “Thank you. Can we talk about something else?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My latest book, "Western Justice" is set in the Black Hills. A body is discovered when volunteers open the Vore Buffalo Jump National Historic Site for spring cleaning. The local sheriff's department is understaffed, so they request assistance from US National Park Service.investigators, Doug and Jill Fletcher. Although the body is unidentified, the coroner comments that the damage to the corpse appears to be the result of being dragged behind a horse, as was a common punishment for horse thieves and cattle rustlers in the Old West.
"Western Justice" is the 14th book in the Doug Fletcher park service series which began with Doug investigating the murder of a visitor in Walnut Canyon National Monument, near Flagstaff, Arizona. Since that first book, Doug's investigations have taken him to Padre Island National Seashore, Everglades National Park, St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, Devils Tower National Monument, Little Bighorn National Battlefield, and Tuzigoot National Monument. Through the course of his travels, he married his partner, Jill Fletcher, who grew up in the Black Hills. Doug's a divorcee, and Jill had been married to her job in the Park Service before becoming soul-mates with Doug. Being middle-aged adults when they married, they each have established lifestyles and their attempts at blending them leads to some humorous dialogue.
At a recent Left Coast Crime Convention, a panel moderator asked if I'd ever had any humorous interactions. I told the story about a reader who called me one evening and said, "There was way too much sex in that last Doug Fletcher book." There are romantic situations, which I choose to end with the closing of a bedroom door. With that in mind, I was confused. The reader's husband took the phone and explained that his wife had gone to Catholic schools, and grew up in a small Iowa town where every child was born by immaculate conception because no one's parents had ever had sex. "The excess sex is totally in my wife's mind!' The panelist next to me waited for the laughter to end, then asked, "Why quit with the closing of the door? You could invent a whole new genre of Mystery Erotica!" I explained that would result in my divorce and the resignation of at least two of editors and proofreaders.
The niche I've chosen is to hint at romance, without getting into the salacious details after the door closes. I've also chosen to rarely use profanity. I'll say something like, "Rob swore like a trucker after hearing the news," without writing out exactly what Rob said. That's led to a couple of reader comments about tough characters should not use "proper English." That's true, but my beta readers and editor "correct" all my incomplete sentences and dangling participles, and I agree to let it slide.
I was once asked who reads my books. My readers tend to be mostly female, often with gray in their hair. They're well-read, polite, and appreciate the effort I put into detail. I rarely sell a book to anyone with children, because they don't have time to read. They appreciate the strong female characters I've created, and the realistic dialogue. My male readers have commented on the action scenes, tempered by the use of humor. I also get comments about how much my readers feel that each story stands alone, is unique, and not the result of some plot formula.
I hope I've tantalized you with a little background on me, my writing process, and the stories I create. One of my beta readers said that "Western Justice" is the best book I've ever written. I can't weigh one book against the other. They're all my children and I appreciate each of them for their uniqueness.
Saving Madonna by Kate Bristow
Saving Madonna
by Kate Bristow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Historical Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB: Is a painting worth dying for?
Inspired by real events, an unforgettable story of love, courage and sacrifice to save a country’s heritage.
Italy 1943. As the Allies bomb Milan, Elena Marchetti reluctantly gives up her coveted job as an art curator in the city to return to her family farm near Urbino. She takes up a new role assisting Pasquale Rotondi, the Superintendent of Arts in the region, in protecting works of art from all over Italy that have been hidden in the relative safety of the countryside.
At a family celebration, Elena reunites with Luca, a close childhood friend. A shattering event instigated by the occupying Germans deepens their relationship, and they start planning a life together. When rumors surface that Italy’s art is being stolen by the German occupiers, Pasquale hatches an audacious plan to rescue the priceless paintings in his possession. Elena and Luca are forced to make an impossible decision: will they embark on a dangerous mission to save Italy’s cultural heritage?
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

“I don’t want tonight to be over!”

Elena’s younger sister, Giulia, was twirling around their bedroom in her linen nightgown, her brown hair loose around her shoulders. Elena, already tucked up in their shared bed, smiled indulgently as she watched her sister dance to some imaginary tune with an imaginary partner.

“It was a real party, wasn’t it, Elena? I wish we hadn’t left—I wanted to squeeze every last drop out of it.” She stopped dancing, her face flushed, and skipped toward the bed, launching herself onto the covers beside Elena. Giulia sat cross-legged and looked at her sister. “It’s different for you,” she said, pouting a little. “You must have had so many chances to dance in Milan. All those parties and boys! And I was just stuck here, doing nothing fun, ever. When is this stupid war going to be over?”

Elena wanted to laugh at the angry expression on Giulia’s face. Instead, she took her sister’s hands in hers. “You’re sixteen, and there’s time, I promise you. When this is all over, I’ll take you to Milan myself. You can meet all the boys—or men—you want.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three historical fiction novels that changed my life.
I love reading. My father taught me to read before I started school, and I was one of those kids who read everything—cereal packages, signs in stores, billboards, shopping lists. If there were words on it, I read it. And to this day, I can think of nothing better than a sunny morning spent in my garden with a cup of coffee and something to read, whether an actual newspaper (I am very old school) or a novel I cannot put down.
While I read many different genres, historical fiction holds a special place in my heart. I love immersing myself in worlds separated in time from my own. An absorbing historical fiction book will linger on after I have read the last page, because I will want to delve into the actual history of the people and events I have been reading about. What was true? What was a figment of the author’s imagination? What else can I learn?
Here are three of the historical fiction books that have had a huge impact on me.
‘The Pillars of the Earth’ by Ken Follett
This engrossing masterpiece came out when I was in my twenties living in London. I am a sucker for fat books that are well written because I read very quickly, and sometimes I long for a story that I can spend some time with. This epic about the building of a cathedral in 12th century England moves the reader to a world that is both immense and intimate at the same time. So much happens in the story and the reader will experience a vast range of emotions. The characters are very well written and I particularly love how grounded they are in their time period. These are not people that exist in the 21st century simply transplanted to the past. The writer has made a big effort to make sure that their actions and dialogue are relevant to that period in English history. Every time I stand in front of a historic building which is regarded as an architectural feat such as the Duomo in Milan I think about this novel.
‘Labyrinth’ by Kate Mosse
Kate and I were students together at Oxford in the early 1980s and I remember how impressed I was when I first discovered that she had started writing and publishing fiction. Kate Mosse is one of the co-founders in 1996 of what has become the highly regarded Women’s Prize for Fiction. But it was with the publication of ‘Labyrinth’ in 2005 that her career skyrocketed. It is a dual timeline novel with two female protagonists, Alice, an archeologist working in France in 2005 and Alaïs, an herbalist from Carcassonne in 1209. The global success of the book demonstrated to me that a popular page-turner could also be richly detailed and well-researched. Kate Mosse bought a house in Carcassonne in 1989, and her love of the area shines through in all her novels that are set there. She was a huge inspiration to me when I decided to write a novel based in Le Marche, Italy where my own home is situated.
‘The Poisonwood Bible’ by Barbara Kingsolver
This book merits a place amongst my all-time top ten books. Barbara Kingsolver tells the story of the Price family, missionaries who decamp from Georgia, U.S.A. to the Belgian Congo in 1959. The father Nathan Price is a religious zealot and disciplinarian who subjects his wife, his daughters and his congregation to increasingly deranged and abusive behavior. The story is narrated by the wife Orleanna and each of the four daughters in turn. The brilliance of the technique is that, although we never hear directly from the Congolese people, the different, often close-minded views expressed by each of the family members slowly illuminate how much more rational, intelligent and clear-eyed the native congregation is compared with the supposed enlightened missionaries. I have read this book several times and after each reading despair that my writing will never be able to reach those heights.
If you have not read one of these books, please do yourself a favor and seek them out. I promise you will not be disappointed!
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Kate Bristow was born in London. She fell in love with reading when she got her first library card at the age of four. Her first attempt at writing and publishing for a wide audience was a local newspaper typed laboriously at home on her mother’s typewriter while at primary (elementary) school in north London. It is surely a loss to cutting-edge journalism that only one issue was ever produced. Kate divides her time between her small-but-perfectly-formed modern home in Los Angeles and her five-hundred-year-old farmhouse just outside Sassocorvaro in Italy.
The Big Shakeup by Nancy Boyarsky
The Big Shakeup
by Nancy Boyarsky
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, or so they say.
P.I. Nicole Graves arrives early at work, just as Los Angeles is hit with “the Big One,” a long-predicted, devastating earthquake. When the building stops shaking, Nicole finds Jerry, her boss, in his office dying of a gunshot wound. It appears to be suicide.
Nicole is shocked to learn that the police have decided Jerry’s death was murder and even more shocked that she’s their only suspect when there’s no shortage of people with motives. And there’s the question of why the detectives are pursuing this one case when all city workers, including the police, are in an all-out search and rescue operation for survivors. All she can do is evade capture long enough to prove her innocence and catch the real culprit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

She got up and hurried down the hall to Jerry’s office to see if his computer was still there. The odor she’d noticed before grew stronger as she approached his door. When Nicole opened it, the smell was unmistakable. It was blood—blood that had been left to ripen a while. She turned on her flashlight and swept the room with its beam. There was something lying on the floor near the desk. Hair rose on the back of her neck as she approached it. Just as she feared, it was a body. As soon as she was close enough, she focused the flashlight on its face and rocked back on her heels. It was Diana Chang, the young woman who’d arrived with Nate Goodman when Jerry was bleeding out. From the amount of blood on the floor, it looked as if Diana had bled out hours ago. She’d been shot through the forehead, and she was very dead.

Nicole got out the burner phone, ready to call 911. Only then did she realize that she—of all people—couldn’t report Diana’s death. Even calling anonymously was out of the question. It might allow the police to track her new phone and learn she’d been at the scene of yet another murder. She also had the feeling that, whether or not they tracked her here, they were still going to blame her for Diana’s death.

Starlight Bender by Sofia Nedic

Starlight Bender

by Sofia Nedic

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Imani Stone has a secret—she possesses an ancestral power to bend starlight.

Having grown up in the lush, magical hills surrounding the ancient city of Lumenor, she is no stranger to star-gazing, potion-making, or tarot-reading. However, in the time of civil war in her city, Imani must hide her power to avoid being recruited by the queen’s legions or killed by the ruthless rebels. But everything changes once the city learns of an incoming army of warriors threatening to destroy Lumenor and steal their starlight crystal. Imani is met with a choice—remain in hiding and help her family or risk everything and join the queen’s legions.

But does she have what it takes to be a legionnaire?

Can she help save Lumenor, or will she be the cause of its demise?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“I knew I would find you here,” I said, crawling my way towards the edge of the rooftop.
Tain was alone, sitting under the cloudy night skies that hid all three moons from us. “Now that you’ve seen the ugly side of being a legionnaire, I hope you don’t regret joining us.”
I cackled. “Are you kidding? I wish someone would have warned me to bring the herb crisps! Jokes aside, it is natural for friends to fight sometimes. Especially in our circumstances.”
Tain paused to think, brushing a silver strand away from his face. The scent of leather in his hand was rich and all-consuming. “Lazzor is like a brother to me, but I agree with Raina, though not with her delivery. We can’t afford the luxury of mercy these days.”
“To kill or not to kill,” I said, grazing my palm over the jagged stone surface. “It won’t get easier, will it?”
Tain shook his head solemnly, glaring at the distant darkness that was the Ashen Desert. Eerie and pitch black, the desert surrounded Lumenor like an inescapable void.
“Anything I can do to cheer you up?” I asked.
His fine features molded into a thinking face. “You can go back to your chamber and put on the most colorful items of clothing you own.”
“Come again?” I tossed my braid over my shoulder, turning to face him. His nose floated inches away from mine. “I know you live in the palace when you are not on duty, but I am no court fool.”
He chuckled, and I inhaled the scent of mint on his breath. “I don’t take you for one, but now that you said it…”
I elbowed him gently, and we both laughed.
“Meet me at the salon in fifteen minutes,” he said. “It is time you meet the bard.”
I squinted. “Who?”
“You’ll see.”
It turned out the bard was him.
